Cleanse - Day 5

I fell off the cleanse wagon today.

It started out to be another great cleanse focused day….however, everything changed when I noticed that my son, Henry, was not feeling well.  Immediately, my stress level rose and all I could think about was his own well being.  All thoughts of the cleanse and my health were out the door.

Henry was mildly dehydrated, not really a full blown illness, however, definitely caused this new mom some alarm.   He wasn’t himself and was fairly lethargic.  Not my usually excited child.  I called the nurse help line to get some ideas of what to do.  Nothing was working initially and I started to freak out.  For several hours.

I chose to drink some pop (a.k.a. “soda”) to handle the stress.   Interesting choice, I thought.  Caffeine and sugar (not on the cleanse diet)  was my choice to help soothe/calm my mood, as opposed to something healthy.  More interesting, was that I didn’t think twice about doing it.  I just wanted to have something sugary.  That was it.  I craved it.  Wanted.  Did whatever it took to have it.

I am not necessarily disappointed in myself, I am just noticing my choices.  I could choose to beat myself up about what I did, or, more importantly, notice what drove my choice.  What motivated me to do that?  Would I do it again?  Was it worth it?

I don’t look at it as a mistake.  I look at it as an “opportunity” to learn and notice something about myself.  A great self-realization.  My will power goes down when I allow stress to overtake me.  My choices become cloudy.  Stress truly is a mind/body connection.

Will I do it again?  Probably not.  Am I recommitting to the cleanse and my “Why”?  Definitely.

May the journey continue…..

Cleanse - Day 4

“On the fourth day of cleansing, my mind/body gave me to craniosacral therapy” (to the tune of 12 Days of Christmas)

I am now getting festive and doing my best to have fun with this cleanse!  So much so that I almost forgot to write in my daily blog - now that is a surprise!

I’m just about to go out on date night with my husband, so this will be brief.

My cleanse is going great.  My 7-month-old son, Henry, is even following suit and has had more dirty diapers (the number two variety) than usual.  I guess that is sympathy cleansing?  Not sure if there is a true term for that, however, I’ll make one up just because it sounds good.

I did treat myself to another alternative method of supporting my body/mind/Spirit today in the form of Craniosacral Therapy.  I do believe it helped me release some of the internal stress and my body felt more energy and more relaxation than I’ve felt in a while.  Definitely will see how further results show up over the next several days and may just go back for another session.

My eating is still going well.  Mindset is still focused and clear on the goal.  Day 4 is almost over - onward and upward!

Cleanse - Day 3

Ah yes, Day 3!

I am still in that pupply love stage of any new relationship.  Me and the cleanse are still close and going strong!  I have not yet had a negative thought or wished, “Man, is this cleanse over yet?”  I am “courting” with Cleanse as if we could go forever…..or something like that.

I am just finishing up my tasty leafy green salad with radishes/carrots/green peppers and sweet potato.  I was inspired to eat this lunch, just coming off of a Bodyflow class at the YWCA.   That class has a nice combination of tai chi/pilates/yoga and was a great treat for myself as I move forward in taking care of my body/mind.

It’s amazing how in such a short period of time, I already feel more energy.   Not only that, but I was even more inspired to be more healthy today by adding chlorophyll to my regimen as well.  More immunity boosting, cell cleansing to be had!

One of my readers had a great question today.  I encourage you all to ask anything on my journey, as you never know how it might help me and in doing so also help you.

The question was if I noticed the cleanse helping me differentiate between addiction and motivation?
Without a doubt, yes.  I have noted that I have tendencies to become addicted, or go on “auto pilot” with some foods in my life, as well as just routines.  It’s a fairly common human condition.  As a runner, I was addicted to running.  As an entrepreneur, I have been addicted to going out to coffee and having my daily caffeine.   As a “wino”, I love my almost daily glass of red wine.  But when one I partake in a cleanse, I don’t get to have any of that stuff and get to just “Be” with a different routine for a while.  It is healthy for my mind, my body and my Spirit.  Keeps me more open and appreciative of others’ habits and enjoyments.  Also reminds me to just be conscious of my habits and why I choose to do the things I do.  Are my habits controlling me?  Or am I controlling them?  It’s very liberating to say “No” to my habits and take a break.  That way I can appreciate them all the more and/or choose if those habits are helping me or not in getting to where I want to be in life.  Or helping me be who I want to be in life.

Looking forward to day 4!

Cleanse - Day 2

Day 2 is nearly halfway over….and I have only fantasized about wine/coffee and chocolate a time or two.

I had a busy day and that helped me pass the time and I discovered that that in and of itself helps the day go faster, as well as the cleanse.  I have not had any away-from-home-emergency-bathroom visits either….at least not yet.

It has been a long time since my last cleanse, pre-baby, and I have remembered some more things of note that help support me.

What else have I noticed about today?

One bonus was that I pampered myself with a free massage from a Mom’s group that I joined.  I was reminded, while receiving the 30 minutes of bliss, that getting a massage during a cleanse is a very good idea.  It helps calm the body/mind while giving myself something to enjoy in lieu of all the things I am not allowed to partake of.

One other thing I was reminded of came at my lunch appointment today.  While eating out with my real estate colleagues, I remembered how tempting restaurant food can be (up ’til that point I had been exposed only to my home made meals/food).  My will power was tested as I saw my friends drinking coffee/sugary beverages, having dessert of ice cream flavored treats following main courses of the red meat and fried variety.  I even caught myself having to take five minutes to realize I had made a mistake of eating a sweet potato fry off my neighbor’s plate….not even making the connection that even though it was called something other than a “French Fry”, it still was a fried food and, therefore, off limits.
Ho hum.

I shook myself off from that brief “slip up” and got back on the ol’ horse, cleanse still in tact.  Day 2 and I am already learning so much!  Can’t wait for Day 10, 11, 12, 13, 14!

I am also pausing more and taking more deep breaths, however, than before.  Always a good thing.

Onward and upward!

Living In The Safest U.S. City

Okay, so I barely just moved back and I have another plug for my favorite city in the U.S. - it is now labeled the “safest” city in the country!

CLICK HERE for the whole story

After moving from one of the most stressed areas of the country, this is a refreshing reminder of why I can stand a little cold in the winter, especially when it means I am less stressed and more safe???  To me, now with a family, is priceless!

Here is a snippet:

“Minneapolis tops our list of America’s safest cities, and not just for its crime rate. In ranking the cities on our list, we looked at workplace fatalities, traffic-related deaths and natural disaster risk; the City of Lakes ranked in the top 10 of all four categories. It’s also one of America’s best places to live cheaply and offers easy access to some of the most scenic drives in the country”

Way to go Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul!

Cleanse - Day 1

Today is the day!  I’m starting my 15-day cleanse and looking forward to it (and a bit anxious even).  I had my vices yesterday so I could get that out of my system, since I can’t have them again in two weeks.  Oh wine and coffee, I’ll miss you!

The way I approach this 15-day cleanse is the same way I approach my 30-day success goals each month for myself and with my coaching clients.

1.  What is my desired OUTCOME
To create a healthier body, mind and Spirit with this cleanse.  To set the foundation for the next cleanse in creating a healthier liver and intestinal tract (doesn’t sound too glamorous, I know, but very important!), improving overall energy

2.  WHY?  In other words, why do I want this and what is my “why” that will help me endure these next 15 days, keeping me going to the finish?
Mentally - this cleanse will help me regain mental focus/clarity - something this new mom has lacked for quite some time!  With this I will have a healthier mental perspective, also, for the health of my family and my business.
Physically - my body will be flushed out of any unneeded waste and help support my cells and liver in the same process - all great things to keep my body healthy overall for now and for the long haul.  This will supplement nicely the body/mind connection and support the mental health along with physical.  I want to be able to work out again and feel as close to 100%, sleep better, have more energy, etc
Spiritually - with the abovementioned benefits, my Spirit will also find rejuvenation - with a healthy body/mind connection, I will feel more alive and have more enthusiasm about live.  “Spirit” means “enthusiasm” or “En Theos” (a.k.a. In God) and I want a revitalized Spirit so I can be a happier/healthier servant to my family/friends/co-workers/clients.

3.  LIST of Action Steps
Take the Tiao He Cleanse supplements every day, twice a day
Check in with my accountability support partners as needed
Drink 8 or more glasses of water every day
Exercise 3 or more times/week - 30 minutes or less

M2 INSPIRED - My Answer To Stress

Another message in a weekly inspirational message series providing you Monday Morning Inspiration to jump start your Monday!

NOTE:  I am a believer of balanced health/medical support.  I fully support both Western and Eastern medical choices.

I’ve written about stress, the top 3 kinds, mental, physical and chemical.  I’ve taught classes/workshops on stress management.  I’ve experienced stress.  Have you?  Haven’t we all??  Sometimes just driving to work on a Monday morning (or any morning for that matter) can be stressful.

Stress is one of the leading dis-ease instigators out there.  If you ever have a negative thought or feeling come over you, undoubtedly it triggers stress to any/all regions of your body.  That body/mind connection is that powerful.  I personally have found that stress is the number one reason I have ever gotten sick or will get sick.  Yet, that theory has come after many years of studying health/wellness, being an athlete (lots of physical stress there), becoming a new mom/wife (no stress there, eh?) and having multiple companies/business.

What are your top stresses these days?  Work related?  Money related?  Relationship related?  Family?  Mental/physical/Spiritual?  All of the above?

What are you doing about your stress?  What is your answer in handling it?

Several years ago, when ever I got sick (again, stress manifested), I simply took antibiotics or some kind of over the counter medication in a reactive way to my illness.  Then, two years ago, I ended up in the emergency room, unable to breathe….and that was when my journey into preventative, natural health/medicine began.  I was tired of ending up in the urgent care 3-4 times a year asking for the latest antibiotics and wanted to find out if there was something I could do about it.  There was.

Other than my wellness check ups for my pregnancy, I can proudly say that I have not had to see a doctor for any illness in 2 1/2 years - all thanks to being proactive.  Taking everything from probiotics to omega 3’s to antioxidants/minerals - I was covered (and so was my baby!)

Yet in the past 13 months, I couldn’t do some of the things I wanted to do to help alleviate or be proactive about all of the stress in my life.  Needless to say that was frustrating, yet for a great cause - my pregnancy and several months of breastfeeding my babe.  I won’t lie to you, I had several “manic Mondays” as a result of all the physical/mental/chemical stress my body was under - along with the normal every day stressers.  I had NO idea what the human body could go through in carrying/delivering/caring for a new child.

However, now that I am finished with breast feeding, I am going to embark upon several cleansing and detoxification journeys in order to get back to where I know I want my body and mind to be.  And not just for me, for my husband and my son.  (Perhaps you have heard that saying, ‘If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody else happy!’)

My “answer” to stress now is to get rid of the “crud” in my body through a chinese herbal cleanse/detox designed for intestinal/digestive care, Tiao He Cleanse.  15 days worth of eating healthier, no alcohol, no coffee, no red meat and a few other limitations (involving will power) and supplementation to get me through my initial cleansing.

I share this with you primarily as an invitation to join me on my journey with this cleanse.  I know how hard a cleanse can be and I don’t want to do it alone.  I want accountability/support as I journey through my first cleanse in nearly a year and a half.

I also shared it to inspire you on this Monday morning, with the hope of you thinking about being proactive versus reactive in your own health/wellness, whatever that looks like for you.  As a success coach myself, I know the importance of accountability and the importance of my health.  I take these areas of my life very seriously and have reaped the benefits of it in so many ways.  I have a happy, healthy baby boy.  I have a happy, healthy marriage.  And my 2010 work/life plan is looking pretty darn good!

What does your 2010 plan look like? Or maybe the next 30 days?  Or this week?  Or even just today?  My hope is that “stress free” living is close to the top of the list.

Feel free to follow along on my daily cleanse blogging journey.  Day 1 will be this week, so stay tuned to www.coreruncoach.com for those 15 days of cleansing activity!

Here’s to you!

M2 Inspired - Billy’s Story

“M2 Inspired” is the new name for my weekly Monday Morning Inspirational series of messages designed to give your Monday a jump start to a great week.  Whether it be via the spoken or written word, the hope is for you to have a surge of energy and mindset shift (if needed) for a productive week personally and/or professionally.

On occasion, I will meet people that will touch my heart and move my Spirit.

And in that same moment, I know I will never be the same.

That’s what happened when I met Billy McLaughlin  last week Tuesday.

I was visiting a local real estate office/brokerage near my home, showing up with the intention of learning more about the office, the agents and their culture/environment.

I arrived only to find a completely different experience.  Billy was there and he was ready to play.

Ever since Billy was 13-years-old (now in his mid-life years, as he would say), his dream was to be a guitarist/musician.  Music was in his blood and he stopped at nothing to convince his parents that they must/had-to get him a guitar and allow him to take guitar lessons.

After teaching himself his first few chords and song out of a library book (his parents’ idea to test his desire and commitment to this supposed “dream” he had), it was evident that Billy was not going to fail, not going to give up.  He was committed.  He was ready to take the journey in this life to becoming a musician that sold his own CD’s, traveled the world and was well known for his talent.

However, what he didn’t know, was that his dream would come true, but it wouldn’t come the way he had planned.

In 2001, after making billboard charts with his own songs and several years of success, he was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease, Focal Dystonia.  He could no longer use his right hand.  He could no longer play his own music.

Essentially, in that moment, his career was over.  Everything he had worked toward, everything he had done since he was 13-years-old, seemingly disappeared over night.

What could he do now that his dream/career was over?

Have you been there?  What would you do?

Maybe you had a job layoff recently and your career seemed to be over.  Maybe you had a relationship end.  Maybe you lost your house or are figuring out how to pay your mortgage.  Maybe you lost your retirement.  Maybe all of the above happened at once.

Billy almost gave up.  He wanted to throw in the towel.  Can’t say that I blame him.  He had started to retrain himself to play with his left hand, something almost impossible to do.  Almost like a right handed pitcher retraining himself to throw left handed.  That doesn’t sound like an easy journey.  That doesn’t happen often, if ever, successfully.

I won’t recount the whole story here (stay tuned for later M2 Inspired messages for that), but what happened would be a stroke of Divine Order.

At his lowest point, he grabbed lunch at a local asian establishment to lift his spirits.  He opened a fortune cookie, shocked at the message that was there just for him.

“Failure only happens to those who quit too early”

Tears instantly filled my eyes.  Billy’s message hit home.  How many times have I wanted to give up.  Throw in the towel.  Especially lately, as a new mom.  Or in the past few years since my mortgage company “failed”.
“Failure” as we humans perceive it, can be a painful thing and hard to shake or forget, especially at a physiological/emotional level.

To see his smiling face now, one wouldn’t know that Billy, as a single dad of two boys, spent several years retraining his body to play all his own music with his left hand.  One wouldn’t know that he almost threw in the towel.  One wouldn’t know that he felt like a failure when his career was, supposedly, “over”.

He now has gigs in India.  He now has sold more CD’s than he ever did while playing with his right hand.  He now has shared his story with thousands.  And what a story it has been and continues to be.

And this is just the beginning.

I thanked Billy for his story and sharing his journey with me.  For, we often forget about that transformational journey that gets us to our dreams - we only focus or hear about the destination, the wins, the final outcome.

Billy’s story is a great reminder to never give up, no matter what.

Here’s to your Monday, to your new week.  Your new clean slate.  May it be filled with everything you require to keep going on your own journey, one day at a time.

Final Core Exercises - Trampoline Required

NOTE:  SHIFTER, INC., CREATED THESE EXERCISES

Here are the final two core exercises of the week.  I saved the best for last.   These two are also the most challenging to learn and master.

These exercises definitely take some training support/guidance and require the use of a 12 foot trampoline.   If you have a trainer that is interested in learning more about these exercises, don’t hesitate to have them contact me.    There are very few trainers who know about these exercises.

Enjoy!
