Running Transformation #3

3.  Expands your capacity to do more – time management at its best!  I may have touched on this one before and want to expand it to a deeper level.  It has been brought to my attention many, many times from many “successful” entrepreneurs/coaches/leaders that time and energy management are key to one’s amount, or levels, of success in life.  I don’t know what your definition of success is, however, I know for me I have found “success” is credited mostly because of my running discipline and training over the years.  I have found my capacity to experience more fun, joy and balance in life has everything to do with the fact that I am a runner.  Success to me is joy, fun and balance in my mind/body and Spirit.
My time management skills were honed over time due to the fact that I wanted to get that daily run or exercise routine in AND create financial success in my business arena AND go to my church/volunteer groups AND have fun with friends/family (basically – have a life) AND travel the world (where I could run more too!).  Let’s face it, if you have competed in a marathon or an Ironman Triathlon event AND still have all the other revolving circles in your life going at a decent pace, you are required to know the meaning of time management.  One gets to learn how to fit in that 5 mile run before work or over lunch hour or that bike ride or swim in between appointments.
Because of this, I am also very much an early to bed, early to rise person.  I can always manage to “create” the time to be, do and have all the stuff I want to have.  There are two 5 o’clocks in the day if one chooses to find that first one (oh so early and yet oh so still/calm/peaceful!).  A lot can be accomplished before 7 or 8 a.m.  I remember rising at 3:30 a.m. one morning while living in Phoenix, Arizona, to log a 20-miler before getting on a plane at 9 a.m. for a trip to Hong Kong.  Now, how is that for creating a plan of action with seemingly limited time and space??
If it looks like there is not enough hours in the day – you still can always manage to create that extra little time slot.  Being a runner expands your capacity to be, do and have an amazing life.
What can you do today to expand yourself?

Running Transformation #4

4.  Gets you to explore a new world.   I have mentioned this a few times in previous reasons on how running can transform your life, however, I wanted to emphasize this one more time.  Running has allowed me to explore many new worlds.  I remember running at 5 a.m. in the spring time in Hong Kong while it seemed thousands of Chinese were practicing their early morning tai chi all around me.  I remember running the streets of Venice in the early morning hours, admiring all the architecture while the street sweepers swept their store fronts before they opened up for their day.  I remember trekking through unknown streets of Sydney, Australia, and “accidentally” stumbling upon the Sydney Harbor in all its glory one early morning – nearly taking my breath away.  I remember having a run in with a bicyclist on the streets of Oxford, England.  We both were shaken up a bit, however, he did, admittedly, have the right of way.  I just wasn’t used to having to share the sidewalk with anyone in that early, rain-filled morning.  I remember running the same stairs as Rocky Balboa after my Philadelphia Marathon.
I am not just meaning when I have traveled the world to experience a new world.  I remember when I was running my usual path in the Twin Cities along the mighty Mississippi and I decided to go “off-road” and entertain a new journey.  Little did I know that it would cause me to be creating my own rock-climbing wall experience down the way when I could find no other way to go other than into the river itself!  (This was in the middle of winter, so my rock climbing back up to the trail was more like mud climbing)
As Dr. Seuss said so graciously, “Oh the places you will go!”  I think he meant that for runners.  It is so true.
Think about where you want to go next.  I guarantee you, if you have a creative mind, you will go a lot farther than just your own back yard.

The Truth About FHA Mortgage

A great article from my colleague and mortgage contact, Bruce Dippong.  There are a lot of reports out there about what is going on in the mortgage industry and you might be wondering which one to believe.  Here is one more update that may very well just be closer than most.  I’ll let you be the judge.

Lots of rumors, lots of news, lots of speculation…. Here is what we have been told from our sources up to now on the Housing bill. Please understand that these are NOT set in stone and have NOT been finalized. We just want you to know what we are being told up to this point.• 3.5% minimum cash investment for FHA loans (gifts allowed from family members, unions, state and local bond programs, etc).
• Seller-funded DPA to end, credit approval required by 9/30/08
• 12 month moratorium on FHA risk-based ) as the new FHAJpremiums effective 10/1 (this should be an insuring nightmare  risk-based premiums went into effective on Monday 7/14.
• Streamlined approval process for FHA condos
• No change to FHA approval requirements (no surety bond in lieu of audited financials as has been lobbied by the Mortgage Brokers Association)
• Nationwide licensing system for loan originators (this is NOT a bad thing if it passes!)
• FHA ceiling at over $700,000 for Orange County/Los Angeles; ceiling for Fannie/Freddie at $625,000 (again, NOT set in stone yet!)
• VA should have equivalent guaranty to raise limit to $625,000 (from $417,000- again, NOT set in stone yet!)

As mentioned nothing has been set in stone, but changes may be happening sooner than expected.

Questions, concerns, thoughts?

Success of Olympians can help you grow your business

Article contributed by my coach, business partner and friend, Leo Ramos of BodyMindSuccess.

Some of the best advice I heard from one of my coaches about watching professional sports surprised me a bit.  He stated that his favorite part of watching professional athletes was their pre or post interviews.  After hearing this, it made a lot sense to me.  If you really take a moment and look at most of these interviews, you’ll see that there is almost always a pearl of wisdom that they’ve learned in the process and are sharing with  us.  Talk about free coaching that works, who else is better qualified to speak on what it takes to succeed, than one who has actually succeeded.  I love seeing the mindset that each of these amazing athletes have acquired to achieve their success.  More importantly, I gain a lot from being reminded of how important my mindset is for getting what I want, and even more by implementing this mindset on a daily basis.

How does this all tie into business?  Here is an game/exercise for you to play.

  1. Watch the video below of Michael Phelps being interviewed.
  2. Write down the key principles that have helped him achieve his success.
  3. Then write down a few ideas of how you could implement those same principles in your business for the next 30 days.  Then observe the success you create in your business.

I trust you actually are going to do this and see the results for yourself.  If you wish to have additional support that comes to no cost to you, I encourage you to register for the free year of coaching that you’ll find on the home page of www.bodymindsuccess.com.

Never Give Up

This is an article provided by a colleague of mine, Bruce Dippong, who is in the mortgage industry.  This message was written to realtors he works with, however, I think it applies to everyone in business for themselves in this economy.  It may not apply directly to you, however, you may know someone that this applies to.  Feel free to pass along.  A great refreshing perspective on a mindset to have as you keep moving forward in the here and now.

Never Give Up!

Since 2005, more than 65% of all Loan Officers have left the business. By this time next year, these numbers will be even higher.  I don’t tell you this to scare you. This is a fact. We tell you this, because we know that everything you need to succeed is always available – except for one thing: your best effort.

How many realtors have left the business during this same time period?

How are you dealing with today’s tougher market? What are you doing everyday to ensure your future in this business? Are you giving your best effort – your very best effort – to succeed?

Take a minute to answer these questions. Then, think about this and ask yourself these questions again. We think you just might surprise yourself at how much more we are all able do.

Make it a great week!!!

PNF Stretching

PNF Stretching

Provided by International Massage Therapist, Zogisle

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is a more advanced form of flexibility training that involves both the stretching and contraction of the muscle group being targeted. PNF stretching was originally developed as a form of rehabilitation, and to that effect it is very effective. It is also excellent for targeting specific muscle groups, and as well as increasing flexibility, (and range of movement) it also improves muscular strength.

Warning!
Certain precautions need to be taken when performing PNF stretches as they can put added stress on the targeted muscle group, which can increase the risk of soft tissue injury. To help reduce this risk, it is important to include a conditioning phase before a maximum, or intense effort is used.

Also, before undertaking any form of stretching it is vitally important that a thorough warm up be completed. Warming up prior to stretching does a number of beneficial things, but primarily its purpose is to prepare the body and mind for more strenuous activity. One of the ways it achieves this is by helping to increase the body’s core temperature while also increasing the body’s muscle temperature. This is essential to ensure the maximum benefit is gained from your stretching.

How to perform a PNF stretch
The process of performing a PNF stretch involves the following. The muscle group to be stretched is positioned so that the muscles are stretched and under tension. The individual then contracts the stretched muscle group for 5 - 6 seconds while a partner, or immovable object, applies sufficient resistance to inhibit movement. Please note; the effort of contraction should be relevant to the level of conditioning.

The contracted muscle group is then relaxed and a controlled stretch is applied for about 30 seconds. The muscle group is then allowed 30 seconds to recover and the process is repeated 2 - 4 times. Refer to the diagrams below for a visual example.

The athlete and partner assume the position for the stretch, and then the partner extends the body limb until the muscle is stretched and tension is felt.
pnf-stretch taken from The Stretching Handbook The athlete then contracts the stretched muscle for 5 - 6 seconds and the partner must inhibit all movement. (The force of the contraction should be relevant to the condition of the muscle. For example, if the muscle has been injured, do not apply a maximum contraction).
pnf-stretch taken from The Stretching Handbook The muscle group is relaxed, then immediately and cautiously pushed past its normal range of movement for about 30 seconds. Allow 30 seconds recovery before repeating the procedure 2 - 4 times.

Information differs slightly about timing recommendations for PNF stretching depending on who you are talking to. Although there are conflicting responses to the question of how long should I contract the muscle group for and how long should I rest for between each stretch, I believe (through a study of research literature and personal experience) that the above timing recommendations provide the maximum benefits from PNF stretching.

Stretching is one of the most under-utilized techniques for improving athletic performance, preventing sports injury and properly rehabilitating sprain and strain injury. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that something as simple as stretching  and/or massage won’t be effective.

Running Transformation #5

5.  Increases your amount of friendships – to a deeper level.  I have found that friends that run together, stay together.  Misery loves company on those long runs.  Life happens together when you sweat and pound the pavement side by side.  That’s what a running club or program offers at the deepest level.  You come together as a team and train alongside one another for weeks at a time, all for the same common goal of finishing.  Once you do, there is celebration together.  I still maintain all of my running club relationships from the Midwest to the Southwest and West Coast.  I have traveled and competed in relays and marathons with my fellow running club friends.  We call each other from coast to coast, time zone to time zone.  Wanting to know what has been going on in our lives – non-running related.  When you share in new jobs, new babies, new houses, new running shoes, new personal records and in the tragic moments of life (death, careers cut short, disease, etc), there is something transformational about those relationships that take it to the next level.  And nothing better than going for a run to share those moments, to reflect, to encourage, to cherish those moments of breathing hard and laughing just as hard.  That is what I have found through my running career and I hope the same for you and anyone that finds running to become a lifestyle and part of every day life.
